MEET JOHN RIVERA.

John Rivera has a distinguished law enforcement career spanning over 40 years with the Miami-Dade Police Department and beyond. His service began on the streets in patrol, then as a detective investigating crimes like thefts, burglaries, and assaults, without ever considering a victims’s societal standing. His commitment to justice continued as he went deep undercover in the Organized Crime Bureau for over a decade, handling major investigations; and always respecting citizens’ rights. Not only did he tackle street crimes, but he also probed political and public corruption, and has emphasized that will be a priority as Sheriff.

Shot in the line of duty. Held a dying partner in his arms.

John Rivera took charge of a specialized task force when the county grappled with its most violent crime surge, and got results. He will do the same as our Sheriff.

His bravery and dedication are undeniable, having been shot in the line of duty and enduring the pain of holding his dying partner.

His leadership capabilities were recognized when he was promoted to sergeant, diversely leading and supervising teams of officers and detectives.

His influence wasn’t limited to the streets: John Rivera served as the Dade County PBA President for over 25 years, representing 6,500 members, and later served as Florida PBA President for 8 years, advocating for 30,000 officers across the state.

John Rivera’s leadership in collaboratively negotiating police contracts enjoyed success for his troops as he worked closely with elected officials from across the political divide.

John Rivera has played a pivotal role in enhancing community safety, actively championing causes like social and environmental justice, protecting our senior citizens, animal rights, auto theft, and combatting fraud in homeowner associations and condo boards. As Sheriff, these issues will be foremost on his agenda.

John Rivera served on FDLE’s Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, ensuring the highest standards for law enforcement officers. His collaborative efforts with the Florida Sheriffs Association highlighted his ability to bridge gaps.

John Rivera’s compassion shines through in his support for the Gold Star families of fallen First Responders. As Sheriff, John Rivera vows to protect his officers and their families while prioritizing transparency and accountability, welcoming public and media scrutiny.
